Apparently J.R.R.'s son finished one of his manuscripts and it is being published this month. I know that most of you are huge LotR fans. What do you think? Should we add it to the book club later this year?

I hated "The Silmarillion" so much that I'm very hesitant to pick up
and read this book until I can see a few reviews and find out if it is
worth my time or just Christopher Tolkien trying to ride the JRR
gravy train again.

I agree with sshoell.  I'd rather wait and see if it is as good as the LotR books, or if it is just another fantasy novel that wants to be better than it really is.

Wahoo! Someone finally agrees with me…does that mean I need to
be more disagreeable?

Well I think Shoell should eat it!!!   How is that for disagreeable? I didn't want you to fade away from a lack of contention. The phrase "Can't we all just get along?" did in poor Bullet Proof Monk.

I bought the book anyway. Sucks to your asmar! Being a card carrying Barnes & Noble member they gave me a considerable discount which helps ensure that I buy more books than I can possibly read. So I don't know when I'll get around to it. It does have some great new illustrations from Alan Lee.

I would like to hear your opinion on it Soyo. Although I had to start over a few times before I was able to get into it and finish it, I really liked the Silmarillion. Once I looked at it as being more like reading the Old Testament than reading The Hobbit it went much better. Anyway, let me know what you think of this new one.

I've only read the first 50 pgs. I've been too busy helping kids and playing 360 to distress to accomplish much else. As a 12th grader I remember the language and pacing of LotR to be something of an obstacle. I can't say how this compares, but the language is a little archaic and the narrative is largely in the third person. I think the story on the other hand is quite compelling. It should make for a good movie.
